Past of the Binnenhof. The first volume of a series of beautiful coffee table books published by Document for a Monument with the Binnenhof as the common thread.
A unique exploration of the genesis of the center of our democratic constitutional state – along the genesis of a building complex that is of great historical importance and unique in the world, and that has its own current dynamics.
Fragments
Court Book I, Past of the Binnenhof tells mainly about the history of the complex and does not do so with the aim of painting a complete picture of the past. In several excerpts, we highlight more or less special, sometimes little-known historical events.
We discuss the preparations for the much-needed renovation and give a taste of what is to come. The second part, appearing halfway through the renovation process, tells about parliamentary history and, in articles and interviews, lets the users of the Binnenhof have their say. For the third part, which will appear when the renovated Binnenhof will be inaugurated, we will delve into history in order, among other things, to uncover the architectural aspects in all their diversity, and above all we will follow the years of renovation and the, sometimes undoubtedly surprising, discoveries made during that process.
Treasures
The above three books give much space to the authorities and persons who made use of the buildings over the centuries. Not only knights and regents pass in review, after all, rebels could also be found in the Binnenhof; and in addition to Dutch princes and rulers, the Binnenhof also saw occupiers from abroad. Colorful ministers and parliamentarians from the distant and recent past are portrayed, but also people who, far outside the light of the floodlights, found a place to work in the Binnenhof, including the very last occupant of the Binnenhof, the janitor.
